You know I had to do this! So I have now created a Facebook page. If you're a little shy about leaving a comment on here, please, go and like the page and send me a message or post. If you want to see a review about a particular movie, TV show, or music video, then please, let me know!
This is a new page, I've never had one before. So if you see something similar, it's not me. Here is the link to my new Facebook page! Please, like and share!
I'm pretty sure you've all heard this song by now! If you haven't then stop reading this and go on YouTube and listen to it right now!
If you're a fun of a jumpy, sing-along, hypnotic kinds of songs then "What Does the Fox Say?" by Ylvis is just the song for you. The group is two brothers from Norway who made a really silly song and video. It's just a collection of animal sounds phonetically but what has them stumped is what the fox says.
By any other means, this song shouldn't work. As mentioned, it's a bunch of sounds as they sing a ballad to the elusive fox. The extras in the music video are dressed up as the different animals mentioned and there are all kinds of proposed, outrageous sounds that the fox could make. With those sounds are different dance moves while the brothers sing, they're dressed as fox themselves. I know! It's this weird, trippy, thing and yet it kind of works.
On the first listen, you find yourself asking what the hell you're listening to. It sounds like someone singing while having a seizure with the stereo skipping. But then you find yourself listening a second time because you want to know what they're saying. And pretty soon, you find yourself singing along with it, dancing along, and making those crazy sounds as well!
Watching the video is a whole other story. On the first glance, you're asking yourself what the hell you're watching. It's two guys singing very seriously about a fox and it brings to mind moody, I'm-so-cool-without-trying teen icons from the 80s. But then it morphs to this giant dance party in the woods where everyone is dressed up and partying.
And you just don't care. After about the 16th time watching the video, I didn't give a rat's behind that these guys were singing to a fox or that everyone was dressed up as animals. All I knew was that I desperately wanted to be at that party. I'm not sure which animal I would be, but I'd like to think my spirit animal is a jaguar.
But back to the video, it's one of those electric, happy songs that knows it's being silly but really doesn't care either way. That's what makes the song kind of genius. Because really, what does the fox say? Remember those little children's wheels where you spin the arrow and different animals have different sounds? Never had a fox on it did it??
No, it didn't! So while this song pretends to be another sleeper hit/fad that has everyone loving it and then forgetting about it, you find yourself thinking about it. There are sounds you know intuitively and there are sounds you learn along the way. But no one really knows what sound the fox makes. So it's a thinking song as well as a song you annoy your housemates with.
This video is weird, it's cool, it's refreshing, it's a non-guilty pleasure that you can have and no one can say anything to you. Seriously, go watch this video. I'll provide it below so there's no excuses! And then when you're done, you can watch the SNL spoof of it which is equally as good/trippy/dumb as the original.
I must really like you guys. You're getting two music reviews in one week!
Of all the music I listen to, Tegan and Sara are the closest to my life story. Like if I was to have a soundtrack to my life so far, their music would definitely be it. Twins, their music embody self-doubt and make you question yourself. Personally, they couldn't be more closer to my life if they tried.
Call It Off is a beautiful, chilling song about being jerked around by a guy and just wanting the pain to end. When in a relationship, and it's one sided and there are more painful memories than happy ones, sometimes you just want to throw in the towel and call everything off.
What I like about their music is that they just get to the core of very real feelings. Like the feeling of being jerked around or the feeling of dismay at not being able to see where a relationship could have gone. No one could understand this more than I can. That feeling of desperation sort of settles in the pit of your stomach and that person you've been obsessing over is just not yielding, it's really frustrating.
The video itself is done in a tone of white. They're in a white room, in white clothes, and the only color comes from colored phone cords that Sara is wrapping around Tegan. I will say this for their videos, they're really creative. Either they're in an auditorium with masked figures, or in a therapy office. I know it doesn't sound all that creative, but you just have to watch their videos in order to get it. Even if you're not used to folk/pop/rock songs, it's still a sight to behold.
The phone cards represent the literal meaning of the lyrics where she's singing "Call, break it off," wishing that whoever she's singing about would just call her and break off whatever is going on between them. But it also encompasses how trapped and tangled she's feeling. She wants it to work, "Maybe you would have been something I'd be good at/ Maybe I would have been something you'd be good at" but at the same time, she can see that its not working and the only way both of them could be happy is for them to just break it off.
I really think that Tegan and Sara are master lyricists blending thought provoking lyrics along with heart wrenching ones.
"There's a chance
I'll start to wonder
If this was the thing to do
I won't be out long
But I still think it better if
You take your time
Coming over here
I think that's for the best"
What I aslo liked was Sara's echoing tones blending with her sister's singing. It just lends a kind of soulfullness to it that trust me, tugs at the strings if you've been through something like this. Honestly, this is another song I play out because it's just that type of song that you can play over and over and really feel the emotion that they're pouring over the speakers. They just bring you to a certain place and you realize that this is what songs are made of. When musicians are talking about that nirvana sort of place they go to when listening to music, this is what it's like for me. That's what they're music does to me.
Seriously, watch the video below. You will NOT be sorry! Enjoy the rest of your weekend!
You have to hand it to Beyonce. You just can't keep her down. Growing up and listening to her music, she was never one to shy away from dancing, out there videos, and unique dance styles. The dancing in Crazy In Love is still my favorite one by far! But what I liked about her earlier music videos were that there were more people. There was more of a full look to her videos with different locales and different dances. But her videos now are a different story.
I had this same problem with Cassie's video for Me And You. It was just her and no one else. Beyonce has gone on this three ladies schtick that I'm just not digging. Once was enough in Single Ladies, I'll okay it for Sweet Dreams, but after that? She should have just stopped. The video for Ego grinds my gears in much the same way and I'm just not digging it.
Visually, the video is amazing. It's in black and white and her skin is flawless as usual. There just seems to be something about black and white that's very appealing, no? It can go from classy to dark to noir-ish, to flawless. In the video, there's just a classy bad assness that is very striking to look at. Per her usual thing, Beyonce dances along to the beat in the beginning and talks. Her oufit is okay, but she's been doing that a lot. It's kind of like now that she's getting older, she doesn't want the world to forget that she has thick thighs and butt, skinny waist, and big boobs.
Mostly it's just these three ladies dancing in this dark room. That's it. Personally, I just want more from music videos. Videos now seem to bow to what's visually creative instead of staying true to the heart of the song. How often have you listened to a song and just had to see the video, only to discover that it had nothing at all to do with the actual song? I know I have and I don't like it. For the purpose of this song, I can see how they couldn't exactly match it to the lyrics, but I would have rather seen more of a variety. She's talking about a guy who's a boss, who has a big *AHEM* ego, yet there's no guy in the video. I'm all for female empowerment, but if you're going to talk about a guy, at least have some eye candy for women.
What I thought was really clever was the song itself. Listening to the lyrics for the first time, I didn't think much of it. I listen for the beat first and if it's something I can bump in the car and it gets me in a good mood or makes me feel something spectacular. Ego doesn't make me feel anything special per se, but it does get me in a good mood and make me smile.
On the second go around, lines like:
It's too big, it's too wide
It's too strong, it won't fit
It's too much,
it's too tough
He talk like this 'cause he can back it up
Make you think of something I won't say here. If you have a dirty mind and have heard the song before, then you know what she's talking about. It's a double entendre song and I give the songwriters kudos for making it a wink, wink song rather then another upbeat song by Beyonce.
Then down the line, the video is mostly Beyonce. This is another problem I have with her videos now. It's more Beyonce centric than her earlier videos even with the videos it was just her in it and then showed whoever was collaborating. It just seems a little narcissistic on her part to have these two other ladies with her, and then it's just her. Anyone else feel that way??
All in all, it's a great song with fantastic lyrics, I just really think that they dropped the ball on the video. The overall look and tone seems right for the song, but since the lyrics are so cheeky and seems like there's a big wink that should be stamped on it, the video just did not reflect what the video should have been.
Hope you enjoyed this review! I know it's short but my whole body is killing me. I honestly just want to lay down and watch Castle! Ahh! Included below is the video to this song so you can see what I'm talking about. Enjoy the rest of your night!
In case you couldn't tell from the title, this review is of the "Somebody That I Used To Know" song. But don't go looking at me weird, this is about the music video. Every once and again I might do this, depending on much I like or dislike a video or song.
Let me just say here and now that I'm so in love with this song, my speakers are probably hating me right now because I play it so much. It's just such a good song, sung so well, the lyrics just amazing, and it just gets me all giddy inside. Songs can do that. They can just make you want to sing along and whatever, put you in a highly better mood than the one you were in before.
However, with that in mind, I was a little iffy about the music video. I know I posted the video on one of my eariler posts, but I'm going to do it again here so that you all know what I'm talking about.
The video begins with an all pink...something. At first glance, you don't know what it is until the camera starts moving and you just see feet. Now, watching this, I was like what the hell am I watching? What kind of perv would put this to one of thee most amazing songs ever? But as the camera is traveling up this naked? man's body, we see that this is actually the music video. So once I figured that out I was like oh! Okay, I get it. And it keeps traveling up until we finally get to his face and now we can see the artist behind the song. I didn't know what Gotye looked like, (I didn't even know how to pronounce Gotye until Pandora spelled it out for me. LOL) and I have to admit, he's not actually that bad looking.
So he starts singing and for some reason I still can't imagine this beautiful voice coming out of him. I don't know why but the singing voice is so soft yet he looks like he would have a deeper voice. I don't know, but it's weird. So he's singing and I'm looking at his eyes which are a cute soft green and his brown curly locks are perfectly placed. Seriously, I'm not sure if his curls ever move in this video! I'll tell you now, I have a thing about teeth. I'm constantly looking at a guys' teeth. I just feel like if someone's teeth are on point, then I can get along with them. I have met some guys I've been turned off of because of their teeth, trust me! So when Gotye sings, you only see part of his teeth, but they're cute to me. They're not perfect and to me that's what makes them perfect. I'm a weirdo, don't judge. LOL.
The video goes on to cut away from him and focus on the pink wall behind him which now has a line being drawn on it, soon joined by other lines, and they start to take on the shape of diamonds. Then they start getting colored in and the whole time, I'm just sitting there like what the heck is going on right now? What does this have to do with not knowing the person next to you anymore?
Finally, it gets into the chorus and all of a sudden, Gotye opens his mouth. He has a huge mouth! I know this has nothing to do with the video or song, but jeez! It just took me by surprise how big his mouth is. Anyway, so Gotye does something a little smart here. Not only are these lines are drawing behind him, they start drawing on him but with paint obviously. Now I get why he's naked! But all this paint is getting on him while he sings about some pretty heavy stuff like:
"But you didn't have to cut me off
Make out like it never happened and that we were nothing
And I don't even need your love
But you treat me like a stranger and that feels so rough
No you didn't have to stoop so low
Have your friends collect your records and then change your number
I guess that I don't need that though
Now you're just somebody that I used to know"
His lyrics are just really powerful. My best friend in the whole world is a huge butthole. But that's sort of what made him charming, because honestly, I could be a butthole too. We were just kind of like kindred spirits in that respect. Yet, now that this fool has gone off to college, we barely speak anymore. It's like he literally cut me off and make it seem like our friendship never meant that much to him. It really is like he treats me like a stranger and it's one of the hardest things I've ever had to go through. I was mad for a long time because he really was one of the few people in my life who actually understood me and what I was about rather than just know me and I liked that. But now I'm in this F*** It place where I don't care what he does. I don't need his love and now he's someone I used to know. So Gotye's lyrics really speak to a deep part of you whether you went through something similar or know someone who has.
Then we get a glimpse of Kimbra trussed up in the same way with paint all over her and she's singing to him that he always made her feel like crap over something he did. And she's saying how she wants out. So the whole song is about these two people who didn't see a gap forming between them over their differences they thought they could ignore. But now the gap is so wide from not expressing their feelings, the only thing they can say is that I don't know that person anymore and I'm getting the hell out of dodge. She's singing and he's reacting and when she reaches the end, he goes back into the chorus.
Now, feel free to disagree with me, but it kind of seems like the background is a sort of glass house. Which would make sense because the album is called Making Mirrors, but bear with me. It's like Gotye is seeing his relationship through a glass house. Like look at all the things I've been missing out on because you've been treating me like crap this entire time. And now that he's understanding this, he's become one with the glass house. He is his own mirror and he's seeing his actions and the actions of those involved for what's true. And so when Kimbra walks away, the paint is off of her, making her not a part of his life anymore. She can't share in his mirror view of the world anymore. She's changed so much to the point where he can't recognize her anymore. I don't know, just a thought.
Then the song concludes and there you have it. All in all, I like the video, I just feel like he could have made the meaning of the song a little clearer. I guess that's my problem with a lot of videos and why, if I really don't like the song, I'm not going to look at the video. I know people are trying to be creative with their videos and the like. That's fine. But it's like can't you be creative AND make the video match the lyrics? Right now, I have an idea for the video to this song that I really like and will probably end up making for my film class next year. But at the end of the day, it's all up to the artist and director and whatever vision they wanted to create.
As promised, here's the video so you can see what I was talking about:
I am a recent grad with a Film Prod Major and I spend my days living and loving life and by night, I'm a writer and a dreamer. I'm also a filmmaker and screenwriter with a book I self-published.
