Happy Labor Day Everyone! I hope yours is as good as mines!
I've been doing shows lately, so I do think it's high time for a movie!
I have a subscription to Entertainment Weekly and it's always jam packed with loads of information about upcoming movies and shows. When Bad Teacher came out I couldn't wait to watch it. I ended up seeing it in theaters with one of my good friends and I could not stop laughing. I found it highly amusing and deliciously funny. But when the newest issue of Entertainment Weekly came out that week, the critics gave it a C and I kept seeing how everyone didn't like it. All I could think was..."WHAT??!!"
I enjoyed the cast, I enjoyed the plot line, and most of all I enjoyed how at the end she didn't really change all that much. She was an anti-hero and I really enjoyed that they didn't sugar coat anything. Elizabeth Halsey knew who she was and she wasn't going to change for anyone. Not even the lovable gym teacher, Russel Gettis.
When I saw that Cameron Diaz was going to carry the movie, I'll admit I was one of the few who raised an eyebrow. This isn't to say that Cameron Diaz can't carry a funny movie, "There's Something About Mary" anyone? It's just that seeing her as this really bad, messed up person was just really out of the realm of what she usually does even though she's one of the few actresses who has skated through Hollywood without a typecast to her name, in my honest opinion.
But watching the movie, Cameron completely did it right. She played the character with a "who gives a
Elizabeth did what she wanted. It begins with her getting dumped by her rich boyfriend because mommy dearest knew she was a gold digger. So what does Elizabeth do? Goes back to teach junior high and trying to get into Scott Delacorte's, played by Justin Timberlake, wallet. Justin is fast becoming one of my favorite actors. I'm really upset that some rappers and singers are getting into acting. Honestly, stick to your freakin' craft and leave acting to the ones who went to acting school and tried hard to be there. This isn't to say that rappers and singers aren't sometimes good at it, but it's like come on. Be happy where you are. But Justin is just so....GOOD at it, that you can't be mad at him. And he's making music on the side. He's just an all around professional kid.
Justin's character is Scott, a relative of a famous watch maker and Elizabeth sees nothing but dollar signs. Scott is in one word: clueless. His character could very easily be annoying and just plain sad but Justin played it with such honest sincerity that he came off more adorkable than annoying. He wears glasses, he can't see that Elizabeth is trying to get into his pants, he can't see that Amy is a ditz, and he definitely can't see that Russel constantly mocks him.
I think that Jason Segal's character was completely underrated. He pops in every now and then and it almost seems like he's the only one who gets it. Who can see everyone for who they really are. He knows he's going to get Elizabeth, he knows that Scott's a dink, and he knows that Amy needs serious help. But Jason plays it with such subtle awesomeness, that I think most critics missed it. And can I just say that Jason is too hot in this movie? I know my friends would look at me weird, but Jason Segal is one smexy beast. I mean jeez, he just oozes sexiness, it's hard to imagine Elizabeth doesn't want that off the back. But of course, it's a movie, and they have to act accordingly.
Elizabeth will do anything for money. Her ultimate goal is to get bigger boobs for Scott so she could soak up his money but he's with Amy. She scrounges money anywhere she can find it, does a sexy dance at the school car wash (which a lot of critics felt were for cheap thrills), and stole the state test so she could get the bonus. I was glad that Elizabeth didn't think she was doing anything wrong. She was just so narrow minded in her pursuit to get her boobs and I liked that she was willing to do anything to get it.
The only thing I might have a problem with about this movie is the "sex" scene between her and Scott. It was just so cringe worthy that I had a hard time watching it. I've seen some far out stuff, so sex doesn't necessarily gross me out. It's just the fact that they were doing it with their clothes on, and Justin the ultimate wet dream, was doing it in such a dorky way. He was rubbing against her, and his facial expressions definitely had me closing my eyes unwilling to witness this beautiful man doing what he did. Though I admire Justin for being out there, for trying new things with his acting, it was just so hard to watch him like that. I freakin' grew up with him and that was just too much. And Elizabeth was beyond bored. But I have to admit, I could not stop laughing when she made that voicemail for Amy and Amy's reaction was priceless.
There's also a side story with the kids that Elizabeth is teaching but who cares about them? LOL. They're terrific actors, don't get me wrong, but for the point of this review, I'm going to review what I want. I am going to say that the kids help Elizabeth mellow out a little bit but not to the point that she's changed. I liked that she was cursing, telling it like it was with those awful cookies, and everything else. Elizabeth was just so good at being bad, you couldn't help but want her as your teacher. I know if I had a teacher like her, I would have never wanted the school year to end.
Overall, I think this was a fantastic movie. I think the actors really brought it and there was no shortage of laughs. This movie is one of the reasons is why I hardly listen to Entertainment Weekly when it comes to new movies. Some movies that I'm reluctant to see, I would listen to them, but when it came to movies I know are going to make it, I don't listen to them because this isn't the first time that they gave a bad score to a movie that I thought was out of this world.
Well, hope you all enjoyed this review. If you haven't seen Bad Teacher, you seriously need to like right this moment. LOL. Enjoy the rest of your Labor Day!
